2021 APPIC Match Statistics - Phase II

This report provides statistics and information about Phase II of the 2021 APPIC Match and the submission of applications via the AAPI service in Phase II.

As compared to last year, there was an increase in the number of students who were registered for and eligible to participate in Phase II (775 vs. 660 last year, up 17%) and a decrease in the number of positions available in Phase II (419 vs. 642 last year, down 35%).

A total of 320 students matched to internship positions in Phase II, while 236 remained unmatched and 219 withdrew or did not submit rankings. A total of 99 positions remained unfilled at the conclusion of Phase II, only 33 of which are accredited.

Here are some additional key points regarding the results from Phase II:

• This year, there was an imbalance between the number of applicants seeking positions and the number of positions offered by training sites. When such an imbalance exists, the impact becomes more pronounced at each stage of the recruitment process. For example, in Phase I of the Match this year, there were 1.1 applicants for every available position, while in Phase II there were 1.85 applicants per position. This led to a lower percentage of applicants matched this year in Phase II (58% vs. 78% last year) while a higher percentage of positions were filled (76% vs. 59% last year).


• The increased competitiveness in Phase II was seen in the average number of applications received per internship site (44 vs. 25 last year, a 76% increase). This increase occurred even though applicants submitted an average of about 12 applications, unchanged from last year, and thus reflects the fact that more students were applying to fewer internship sites.


• The impact of the imbalance is predicted to be even more significant as we move into the next step of the process, the Post-Match Vacancy Service (PMVS). Considering the number of students who submitted applications in Phase II but did not match, we estimate that about 300 students are still actively seeking positions. This number does not include the students from "PMVS-only" doctoral programs (unaccredited programs that are eligible to participate in the PMVS but not the Match) who may also be seeking positions via the PMVS. Only 99 unfilled positions remain, plus any additional positions that may become available in the PMVS later this Spring/Summer (e.g., due to programs receiving additional funds).


• Despite the significant imbalance that occurred this year, it should be noted that after completion of both Phase I and Phase II, 92% of participating students were placed into internship positions (compared to 96% last year) and 97% of internship positions were filled (compared to 93% last year).

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

NOTE: A training site can offer more than one "program" in the Match. Each "program" was identified in the Match by a separate 6-digit code number.

NOTE: 27 of the training sites that remained unfilled submitted either no ranks or fewer ranks than the number of positions available.

NOTE: 24 of the programs that remained unfilled submitted either no ranks or fewer ranks than the number of positions available.

NOTE: No ranks were submitted for 41 of the positions that remained unfilled.

Non-accredited positions represented 67% of all positions remaining unfilled in Phase II of the Match.

ADDITIONAL STATISTICS

^*NOTE: Due to unusual circumstances, one applicant who matched in Phase I was released from the Match commitment by APPIC and was eligible to participate in Phase II. The position that was filled by that applicant in Phase I was added into Phase II.
