2012 APPIC Match Statistics - Phase II

This report provides statistics and information about Phase II of the 2012 APPIC Match, and the submission of applications via the AAPI Online service in Phase II.

Here is a brief summary:

• Of the 1,467 applicants who were eligible to participate in Phase II (i.e., who either withdrew or were not matched in Phase I), 955 submitted one or more applications in Phase II, 640 submitted a Rank Order List in Phase II, and 184 were matched in Phase II.
  
  
• Applicants submitted an average of 10.2 applications in Phase II, a 35% decrease as compared to the mean of 15.6 applications submitted per applicant in Phase II of the 2011 Match. This decrease is likely the result of a change in Phase II application requirements for 2012, as applicants were asked to tailor their cover letters to each site (as compared to last year's instructions to send a "generic" cover letter).
  
  
• Sites received an average of 85 applications in Phase II, a 23% decrease as compared to an average of 110 received last year.
  
  
• A new feature of Phase II this year allowed internship Training Directors to add new programs and positions (e.g., if additional funding was obtained) and to shift positions between programs. This resulted in 6 programs and 12 positions being added to Phase II, for a total of 146 programs and 234 positions in Phase II.
  
  
• Of the 146 programs in Phase II, 8 programs and 11 positions were withdrawn, while 11 programs with 12 positions did not submit any ranks. In addition, 7 programs submitted fewer ranks than they had available positions, resulting in 9 positions with no ranks. As a result, of the 234 positions in Phase II, 32 had no chance of being filled in the Phase II Match. Reasons that programs withdrew or did not submit ranks included a decision not to fill their position(s), uncertain funding, and not having enough qualified applicants (e.g., for specialized positions with specific requirements).

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

NOTE: A training site can offer more than one "program" in the Match. Each "program" was identified in the Match by a separate 6-digit code number.

NOTE: The number of positions for which no ranks were submitted included 12 positions at programs that did not submit any ranks, and 9 positions at programs that did submit ranks but the number of ranks submitted was less than the number of positions.

NOTE: Programs that submitted a Rank Order List with fewer ranks than positions available were counted as "unfilled".

NOTE: For programs that submitted a Rank Order List with fewer ranks than positions available, the positions without ranks were counted as "no ranks" rather than "unfilled" (e.g., a program submitting 1 rank for 3 positions would have 2 positions counted as "no ranks").

Non-accredited positions represented 100% of all positions remaining unfilled in Phase II of the Match.
