2015 APPIC Match: Survey of Internship Applicants
Part 1: Summary of Survey Results
This report contains the results from the survey of internship applicants who
were registered for the 2015 APPIC Match.
This survey was conducted via the internet between February 20 and March 23, 2015.
All 4,247 applicants who registered for the Match were sent an e-mail message
(along with two reminder e-mails) about the availability of the survey at a
specific internet address. A total of 2,729 applicants (64%) completed some or all
of the survey.
Results of the survey are presented below. Missing data and "Not Applicable"
responses were eliminated, and percentages do not necessarily total 100% due to
rounding. Some survey items requested open-ended comments about the AAPI,
APPIC Directory Online, the Match, etc. that are not reported below; however,
these anonymous comments were reviewed by the appropriate APPIC Board and/or committee
members who are responsible for each area.
Some of the more interesting findings from this survey include:
1. DEBT: Applicants' mean reported debt load related to
graduate level study in psychology was $94,542 (SD = 93,818,
median = $80,000), an increase of nearly $10,000 (12%)
from 2012 (see question 11). Approximately 44% reported
debt of $100,000 or higher while 28% reported debt exceeding
$150,000.
Please note that these figures do not include any additional
debt that these students may accrue during the remainder of
their graduate training (e.g., during internship).
2. INTERVIEW FORMAT: Applicants reported that most interviews were
conducted on-site (77%), followed by via telephone (9%), open
houses (7%), and Webcam/Skype (6%) (see question 17). Applicants
greatly preferred on-site interviews over other types of interview
formats (see item 31), with nearly three-quarters indicating that
the benefits of an on-site interview outweigh the time, effort,
and costs of attending (see item 30).
3. STANDARDIZED LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Applicants were split in
their opinions about whether the standardized letter of
recommendation that is under development by APPIC will provide
added value to these letters (see item 32).
4. NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS: In Phase I, applicants submitted an
average of 16.1 internship applications (see question 14) and
received an average of 6.7 interviews (see question 16).
5. COST: The average total cost of participating in the
application process rose 22% as compared to 2012, while the
median total cost increased by 36% (see question 20).
6. GENDER: Approximately 80% of internship applicants in the
2015 Match were female (see question 42). Questions 37-45
provide additional demographic information.
7. PRACTICUM HOURS: Median doctoral hours reported by
applicants from the 2015 APPIC Match (see question 52):
Doctoral Intervention: Median = 602
Doctoral Assessment: Median = 164
Question 52 also provides the median numbers of masters
practicum hours reported by applicants.
APPIC recommends that applicants interpret these numbers
cautiously. Applicants should NOT assume that the numbers
of practicum hours reported are necessary to successfully
obtain an internship, as many Training Directors have told
us that they consider these raw numbers to be one of the
less important aspects of an application.
8. SALARY: Matched applicants reported a mean internship
salary of $25,948, an increase of 5.6% from 2012 (see
question 27).

14. To how many internship sites did you apply in Phase I of
the APPIC Match (i.e., how many separate internship
applications did you submit)?
Mean = 16.1 Median = 16
SD = 5.8 Mode = 15
NOTE: The AAPI Online service provided a financial
disincentive for applicants to submit more than 15
applications.
For comparison purposes, the mean numbers of submitted
applications in previous years were:
2012 Match 16.3 applications
2011 Match 16.0 applications
2010 Match 15.1 applications
2009 Match 14.7 applications
2008 Match 13.9 applications

15. Considering ALL of the sites to which you applied in Phase I,
how many did NOT notify you of your interview status (e.g.,
received an interview, no longer under consideration) on or
before the "interview notification date" listed in their APPIC
Directory information? For example, if all of your sites
notified you in a timely manner, choose "0".
Mean = 1.0 Median = 0
SD = 2.6 Mode = 0
NOTE: A total of 64% of applicants reported being properly
notified of their interview status by all sites to which
they applied (compared to 55% in 2012).
16. How many interviews (telephone or on-site) were you offered
during Phase I?
Mean = 6.7 Median = 6
SD = 4.1 Mode = 5
17. Please indicate HOW MANY of your interviews used each of the
following methods: (Each interview should be counted in only
one category)
On-Site Interview Mean = 5.6 (77%)
Open House Mean = 0.5 ( 7%)
Telephone Interview Mean = 0.7 ( 9%)
Interview via WebCam, Skype, etc. Mean = 0.4 ( 6%)
Other Mean = 0 ( 0%)
NOTE: Percentages are the proportion of interviews that were
in the specified format. Many applicants left some of these
items blank. Thus, for this question, blank responses were
treated as "zero."
18. How many programs did you include on your final Rank Order List
in Phase I (i.e., how many program code numbers were listed)?
Mean = 7.5 Median = 7
SD = 4.7 Mode = 5
NOTE: Use caution when comparing these numbers with the results
from questions 14-17, since some sites used multiple program code
numbers.
19. Did you participate in the Match with another person as a
“couple” (i.e., by using special Match procedures to submit
pairs of rankings)?
Yes 25 1 %
No 2679 99 %
20. APPIC would like to know how much money you spent on various
aspects of the application and selection process for Phase I only.
Application costs involve preparing and submitting applications
to sites, and may include such items as the fee for the AAPI
Online service, obtaining official copies of transcripts,
printing, copying, regular and overnight mailing, etc.
Travel costs may include such items as air or train fare,
car rental, taxi, gasoline, hotel, etc. Other costs may include
such items as your Match registration fee ($130 or $160),
clothing costs, phone calls, etc.
Please enter your BEST ESTIMATE of the dollar amount spent, digits
only, in each of the following areas (e.g., one hundred dollars
US or Canadian would be entered as simply 100):
TOTAL COSTS: Mean = $2344 SD = 1817
Median = $1950
APPLICATION COSTS: Mean = $ 539 SD = 335
Median = $ 500
TRAVEL COSTS: Mean = $1650 SD = 1561
Median = $1200
OTHER COSTS: Mean = $ 335 SD = 364
Median = $ 230
NOTE: The average cost of participating in the application process
increased by 22% as compared to 2012, while the median cost
increased by 36%. Average travel costs increased 13%, average
"other" costs increased 7%, and average application costs
increased 86% (likely due to an increase in the per-application
cost of the AAPI Online) as compared to 2012.
21. Were you matched to an internship program by the APPIC Match?

NOTE: Some previous APPIC applicant surveys asked this question
with the instruction to "check all that apply," while the current
(2015) survey allowed applicants to choose only one option.
This change likely had a significant impact on the results.

32. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: APPIC often receives feedback from
internship sites that letters of recommendation are limited in
value because they emphasize the positive aspects of candidates
while omitting their areas of growth and recommendations for
further training. APPIC has developed a “standardized” letter of
recommendation, which would require letter-writers to address
specific areas for each applicant. In particular, letter-writers
will be asked to describe BOTH positive characteristics AND
growth areas and recommendations for training. It is hoped that
this approach will increase the value of the letters to internship
sites in evaluating applicants.
What is your opinion about whether or not a standardized format
will add value to letters of recommendation?

DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
Following are a series of questions that request personal demographic
information.
We are seeking your responses to these questions because from time to time we
are asked about the effect of various demographic factors on Match rates.

of information, to date we have been unable to answer these questions. We
hope that this survey will allow us to more definitively understand the
potential impact of these factors on the internship selection process.
The information that you provide will remain ANONYMOUS and will be reported
in aggregate form only. While we hope that you will answer all of these
questions, you may skip any item that you do not feel comfortable

QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR AAPI
52. We would like to know the TOTAL NUMBER OF PRACTICUM HOURS that
you reported on your AAPI, including doctoral hours and terminal
masters hours. (This information is located in the "Summary of
Doctoral Training" section of the AAPI online, about halfway
down the page under "Summary of Practicum Experience." Please
enter all six numbers from this section below.)
a. INTERVENTION: Doctoral Hours Median = 602 N = 1989
Mean = 666 SD = 311
b. INTERVENTION: Terminal Masters Hours Median = 0 N = 1279
Mean = 123 SD = 269
c. INTERVENTION: Total Completed Hours Median = 650 N = 1817
Mean = 742 SD = 393
d. ASSESSMENT: Doctoral Hours Median = 164 N = 1972
Mean = 216 SD = 189
e. ASSESSMENT: Terminal Masters Hours Median = 0 N = 1270
Mean = 18 SD = 88
f. ASSESSMENT: Total Completed Hours Median = 170 N = 1818
Mean = 234 SD = 237
NOTE: APPIC advises applicants to interpret these numbers
cautiously. Applicants should NOT assume that the numbers of
practicum hours listed above are necessary to successfully
obtain an internship, as many Training Directors have told us
that they consider these numbers to be one of the less important
aspects of an application.
NOTE: Respondents who left any item blank were excluded from
the calculation for that specific item. Medians may be a
more accurate representation given that means and standard
deviations were greatly affected by a small number of applicants
who reported an extremely high number of hours.
53. For each of the following populations, what was the total number
of supervised integrated psychological reports that you reported
on your AAPI? (This information can be found in the
"Psychological Assessment Experience" section of the AAPI Online,
under "Integrated Reports.")
Adults Median = 8 n = 1936
Children / Adolescents Median = 5 n = 1831
NOTE: Respondents who left any item blank were excluded from
the calculation for that specific item. Only medians were reported,
as means and standard deviations were greatly affected by a few
applicants who reported an extremely large number of integrated
reports.
