We want to reach out to prospective applicants for Phase II to clarify some questions related to our accreditation status. Given that we remain accredited and chose not to have an internship cohort for the 2019-2020 training year, we are currently listed with the APA as “Accredited-Inactive”. We understand the Accredited-Inactive status has or may create confusion and want to clarify that we are participating in Phase II of the Match and still accepting applications for the 2020-2021 internship cohort. Our decision to be inactive was based on the intention of recruiting a permanent Training Director prior to the arrival of a new cohort. Dr. Kimberly Burdine was hired in October as permanent Training Director (formerly Interim TD), and we are excited to have a 2020-2021 internship cohort. If you have any questions about our program contact Dr. Burdine. We look forward to reviewing your application!

VA NWI has 6 open positions for Match II:
221711 - NWI-Rural Outpatient Focus-Omaha VA - 1 position
221712 - NWI – Ass’m’t Focus + Rural - Omaha VA - 1 position
221713 - NWI - Rotation Based - Grand Island VA - 2 positions
221714 - NWI - Rotation Based - Lincoln VA - 1 position
221715 - NWI - NO Rotations - Rural Norfolk CBOC - 1 position

The VA Nebraska-Western Iowa internship now unites 7 APA-accredited internship positions across 4 training sites (with 5 tracks) through an “excellent generalist” focus. This is a change from the 7 intern positions across 3 training sites described in our original brochure.

Unfortunately during the Match I process it became clear due to staffing changes that we would have to adjust our offerings at two of our sites - Grand Island and Lincoln. In response, we “moved” two positions to two new tracks in Omaha to accommodate these changes. This has also meant some changes to the rotation structure at Lincoln and possibly in Grand Island with Lincoln definitely moving to two 6-month rotations (PTSD and PCMHI) 16 hours a week plus 8 hrs a week General MH for the full year, plus the year-long Assessment Clinic 8 hrs per week). Lincoln Interns will no longer be required to do Polytrauma as part of their assessment but this remains available to Interns across all training sites. Norfolk will remain unchanged. The first of the two Omaha tracks (221711) remains as described as unfunded in our current (soon-to-be-updated) brochure. The other Omaha track (221712) is totally new, is housed in the Polytrauma Support Clinic, and has a greater assessment focus (16-20 hours per week (note this is not a neuropsych track per se). Interns at all sites will have a diverse array of intervention cases including PTSD and General outpatient MH cases, and all tracks continue to be designed to meet the 9 Profession-Wide Competencies.

Please see our current APPIC description of our programs to reflect changes through the course of Match I. We hope the new updated Match II brochure will be up on our website soon: https://www.nebraska.va.gov/nemprov/Student_Training_Information/Psychology_Internship.asp

Neuropsychology Track interviews will occur primarily on March 6 and March 11. General Track interviews will occur March 6 & March 9-13. Updates to the current brochure include: Prolonged Exposure group experience IS available on the PTSD-RRTP rotation as the research study limiting intern involvement has wrapped up. A three day Motivational Interviewing training (“VA roll-out”) will be offered in the Fall. Wyoming Health Care Center experience IS available starting January 2020.
