Postdoctoral residents training at the Center City location complete mental health diagnostic intake assessments, provide individual and group therapy, provide consultation to the multidisciplinary team (daily team huddles and weekly treatment planning meetings), and engage in risk assessment and crisis intervention. Testing opportunities may be available but are typically limited as our patients are in early sobriety. Residents are provided 2 hours of supervision weekly including 1 hour of individual and 1 hour of group. They also receive 1-2 hours of didactic training monthly. Additional tasks may include email, documentation, treatment planning, providing continuing care recommendations, and providing patient or student lectures. Opportunities for mentorship or potentially supervision training may be available. Research opportunities in collaboration with our Butler Center for Research also may be available.
Residents treat patients in an addiction treatment facility focusing on a wide range of mental health presentations co-occurring with substance use disorders. Treatment is focused on assessment and stabilization to reduce risk of relapse and promote mental health stability. The mental health team strives to provide patient care and clinical consultation that is trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, and individualized to each patient.
Trainees are assigned to 3 rotations during the training year. They provide services on their assigned residential or day treatment unit(s). Available rotations may include: men's residential, women's day treatment units, men's day treatment units, and the medical/detox unit.
Residents are trained to be ethical providers and learn to work in a fast-paced environment utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach. Trainees collaborate with addiction counselors, addiction techs, medical providers, psychiatry staff, spiritual care providers, wellness team members, nutritionists and their mental health team in order to provide the best patient care. The multidisciplinary team offers an excellent learning environment. The mental health team values cultural humility and individual differences and are important members of the team as they are often coaching colleagues on providing trauma informed and culturally appropriate care.
Postdoctoral residents in Center City typically work 8-4:30 M-F and rotate coverage of weekend days.

Residents qualify for employee benefits, which include group medical, dental, group life, and disability insurance. Hazelden Betty Ford also offers a retirement plan, paid holidays, 4 weeks of personal time off, and other benefits. Postdoctoral residents may also take advantage of many opportunities provided by the organization. As part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, there are several free continuing education opportunities available throughout the year. Time devoted to attending conferences, workshops and the licensure examination may also be available. Supervision will be provided onsite and will be consistently available.
- Research opportunities
- The training program's involvement in research varies each year. During the current training year, the trainees are actively involved in research opportunities in collaboration with the HBFF Butler Center for Research. This is primarily a clinical training position but HBFF values science and research and makes opportunities available for trainees to get involved in research occurring here when possible. Postdocs are often given projects that require scholarly inquiry skills to improve or develop programming.
- Additional Comments
- Most of our patients are diagnosed with substance use disorders and the majority are also diagnosed with 1 or more mental health disorders. The program follows the disease model of addiction and utilizes the 12 Steps. Our patient population is diverse. Patients come from around the country and around the world to attend treatment. Our population represents the full range of socioeconomic status. We welcome those of all religious beliefs and non-believers. We offer additional programming for individuals identifying as LGBTQ+, recognizing the additional risk in regard to their addiction and need for a sense of community and inclusion in this population.
We have a history of training supervisees identifying of minority status. The training program is dedicated to providing a safe training environment for all our trainees. We welcome and encourage diverse applicants. Training supervisors are dedicated to providing multiculturally-appropriate supervision and bringing diversity into the supervision experience. The training program has developed a diversity sub-team to provide a structure for trainees and staff to improve inclusion experiences and improve our efforts to recruit and retain diverse staff and engage in best practices in providing clinical services.
Because this site provides residential treatment and day treatment with housing on campus, this site remains open for in-person services. Trainees are continuing to receive training on campus with greater distance between them and patients. A few groups have been paused. Of course, trainees and patients are expected to wear masks. Some staff meetings have been moved to an online format, but overall services and the training remain the same. We have had no concerns with continuing training and continuing to provide our salary and benefits to our trainees.
