The VA Boston Psychology Internship Training Program is pleased to announce
that our program has awarded funding for a new and permanent rotation in Severe
Mental Illness and Suicide Prevention! The Severe Mental Illness and
Suicide Prevention (SMI-SP) rotation is located exclusively on the Brockton
Campus of the VA Boston Healthcare System and collaborates closely with the
Harvard South Shore Psychiatry Residency Training Program. This rotation offers
an opportunity for training primarily within an interdisciplinary,
recovery-oriented Inpatient Mental Health program, with an emphasis on treating
Veterans with SMI, co-occurring substance use disorders, and/or severe
suicidality. The SMI-SP rotation includes two to three days within an
inpatient mental health setting and one to two days focused on suicide
prevention, both within inpatient and outpatient settings. Remaining time will
be devoted to other internship training requirements, including the intern’s
chosen adjunctive training experience (ATE), scholarly inquiry/research, and
internship program didactics. Interns on the SMI-SP rotation will interact with
psychiatry residents, nurse practitioner residents, and social work interns.

The Emerging
and Early Psychosis Placement (APPIC match code #118313) is a new
internship position which offers a primary placement at the Prevention through
Risk Identification, Management & Education (PRIME) Program, which
identifies and treats young people ages 12 to 25 who are at clinical high risk
for psychosis. A secondary placement at the Specialized Treatment Early in
Psychosis (STEP) Program provides training in coordinated specialty care to
individuals in the early stages of a first episode of psychosis ages 16 to 35.
The Adult Inpatient
Services (AIS; match code #118324) now offers a secondary placement at Adult
Community Mental Health (ACMH) Services. Previously, the AIS primary placement
did not include a formal secondary placement.
