for Non-APPIC Member Programs APPIC Match and Clearinghouse Policies
for Non-APPIC Member Internship ProgramsThis page summarizes
the relevant APPIC policies related to the participation in the APPIC Match and
Clearinghouse of sites that are not APPIC members, and provides additional information
that non-member sites may find helpful. Two-Year Participation
Limit for Non-Members
In general, due to the APPIC Board's commitment
to assuring that internships participating in the Match are of high quality, internship
programs that participate in the APPIC Match must meet APPIC membership criteria
and be members of APPIC. However, the Board has provided non-APPIC member programs
with a grace period, allowing them to participate in the Match for a limited time
while in the process of becoming members. Thus, internship programs that
are not APPIC members may participate in the APPIC Match and/or Clearinghouse
for a maximum of two years as non-members (exception: this two-year limitation
does not apply to non-member programs that are members of CCPPP, the Canadian
Council of Programs in Professional Psychology). Participation in the APPIC Match
and/or the APPIC Clearinghouse within the same selection year constitutes one
year of participation. After two years of participation, non-APPIC member
programs will no longer be allowed to participate in future Matches. For 2008,
non-APPIC member programs will be permitted to use the APPIC Clearinghouse (upon
paying the appropriate fee to the APPIC Central Office), even if they have previously
participated for two years as non-members. However beginning in 2009,
non-APPIC member programs that previously participated in the Match and/or Clearinghouse
for two years as non-members will not be permitted to use the APPIC Clearinghouse.
If Your Site Has Not Reached the Two Year Limit
Your site is eligible
to participate in the 2008 APPIC Match. The current fee for non-APPIC members
to participate in the APPIC Match is $240 US per year. This fee is non-refundable,
and a check or money order for the full amount must accompany your completed Match
registration materials when submitted to National Matching Services. Please
note that participating in the APPIC Match as a non-member does not provide effective
advertising for your internship program. You will not be listed in the APPIC Directory,
as such listings are reserved for APPIC Members. Furthermore, while you will be
listed in the "List of Participating Programs" on the National Matching Services
web site, most applicants do not use this list to identify programs of interest.
Thus, you will need to use other methods of advertising to let potential applicants
know about your program. Your site is also eligible to participate in the
2008 APPIC Clearinghouse, if needed. If your site registers for the Match, you
may also participate in the Clearinghouse at no additional charge. If your site
does not register for the Match, the fee for participation in the APPIC Clearinghouse
is $240 US, which must be submitted to APPIC prior to your participation in the
Clearinghouse. If you plan to apply for APPIC membership this year, please
note that the membership application fee paid to APPIC is separate from the fee
you are required to pay to register for the Match and/or to participate in the
Clearinghouse. If you register for the Match and you attain APPIC membership no
later than January 15, 2008, the difference between the non-member registration
fee you have paid to register for the Match and the Match fee paid by members
will be credited back to you at the time of your next APPIC membership renewal.
If Your Site Has Reached the Two Year Limit
Your site is not eligible
to participate in the APPIC Match unless your site becomes an APPIC member, as
discussed below. However, your site may participate in the 2008 APPIC Clearinghouse.
The fee for participation in the APPIC Clearinghouse is $240 US, which must be
submitted to APPIC prior to your participation in the Clearinghouse. Note:
beginning in 2009, your site will no longer be permitted to use the APPIC Clearinghouse. If
you plan to apply for APPIC membership this year, you will be permitted to provisionally
register for this year's APPIC Match only if you have submitted a completed membership
application to APPIC (along with the appropriate membership application fee) to
the APPIC Central Office no later than September 30, 2007. Once your completed
application has been submitted, please contact Greg Keilin, the APPIC Match and
Clearinghouse Coordinator, at (512) 475-6949 or gkeilin@mail.utexas.edu
to arrange for provisional registration of your site in the Match. Provisional
registration will require you to submit to NMS an agreement to participate in
the Match along with the non-refundable Match fee of $240 US. Please note that
the membership application fee paid to APPIC is separate from the fee you are
required to pay to register for the Match and/or to participate in the Clearinghouse.
If you provisionally register for the Match and you attain APPIC membership no
later than January 15, 2008, the difference between the non-member registration
fee you have paid to register for the Match and the Match fee paid by members
will be credited back to you at the time of your next APPIC membership renewal. Once
you have provisionally registered, you will be permitted to remain in the Match
only if your site is approved for membership by the APPIC Board no later than
January 15, 2008. It is your responsibility to ensure that your application meets
APPIC's membership criteria, and it is imperative that you respond promptly to
any inquiries or requests for additional information that you receive from APPIC's
Doctoral Membership committee. Provisionally registered programs that have not
been approved for membership by January 15, 2008 will be removed from the APPIC
Match (although their previously-paid non-refundable Match registration fee will
allow them to use the APPIC Clearinghouse). Provisional registration in
the Match can be beneficial because it will allow you to inform your applicants
that you will likely be participating in the APPIC Match. You will also be able
to provide your Program Code Number(s) to your applicants, and you will be listed
on the "List of Participating Programs" on the NMS web site.
For Non-Member Sites That Participate in the Match or Clearinghouse
You
must inform applicants that your program is not an APPIC Member. Furthermore,
any communication to applicants about your program's intentions to appy for APPIC
membership, or about the status of a membership application that has been submitted
but not yet approved, must include the provision that there is no guarantee that
the program will ultimately be successful in attaining APPIC membership.
Additional Information
Here is some information about the Match
and about APPIC that you may find useful: - For information about becoming
an APPIC member, click on "Joining APPIC" in the right-side menu at the top of
this page. You will see links to the appropriate membership criteria as well as
downloadable application materials. Please feel free to contact APPIC if you have
any questions about the membership process.
- In addition to the
information available on this web site, extensive information about the APPIC
Match may also be found at: http://www.natmatch.com/psychint.
Once you have registered for the Match, comprehensive ranking information
will be mailed to you during the month of December. - We strongly
suggest that you subscribe to the APPIC e-mail list, MATCH-NEWS. This list provides
news and information about the APPIC Match, and is an extremely valuable resource
for Training Directors and applicants. To subscribe, send a blank e-mail to:
subscribe-match-news@lyris.appic.org You
will subsequently receive an e-mail message (with the subject line, "Your confirmation
is needed") that contains instructions for you to follow in order to confirm your
subscription. Simply reply to this confirmation e-mail as instructed, and you
will soon receive a "Welcome" e-mail in response. This "Welcome" e-mail confirms
that you are successfully subscribed to the list (please note that you are NOT
subscribed to the list until you have received the "Welcome" e-mail). PLEASE
NOTE: If your e-mail program uses "Spam" or "Junk Mail" filtering, it is possible
that the confirmation message from the APPIC server will be automatically redirected
to your "Junk Mail" folder without your knowledge. This has been a particular
problem for AOL and Hotmail users, but it can affect others as well. If you do
not receive a confirmation message in your "in" box, you should check your "Spam"
or "Junk Mail" folder to see if the message is there. If your e-mail program does
use filtering, you should instruct it to accept all e-mail from APPIC's e-mail
list server. - The APPIC Board of Directors has established a
mentorship program with the goal of facilitating the growth and development of
new internship programs. While this goal has always been a part of APPIC's support
efforts for the training community, APPIC has prioritized this effort as part
of its follow-up activities to the APPIC/APA Supply and Demand conference in 1998.
If you wish to find out more information about this mentorship opportunity, or
if you would like to be assigned a mentor, please contact Dr. Arnold Abels at
abelsa@umkc.edu.
We appreciate
your interest and participation in the APPIC Match, and look forward to a strong
working relationship in the future. If you have any questions or concerns, or
require any additional assistance, please feel free to contact Greg Keilin, Ph.D.,
the APPIC Match and Clearinghouse Coordinator, at (512) 475-6949 or gkeilin@mail.utexas.edu.
Alternatively, for questions about the APPIC Match you may contact National Matching
Services Inc. at (416) 977-3431 or psychint@natmatch.com.
