Scottish Rite for Children’s Psychology Department offers a one-year, 12-month Pediatric Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship. The fellowship is designed to prepare doctoral-level psychologists to practice in ambulatory care, inpatient, or outpatient pediatric settings. The fellowship offers clinical and research training in pediatric psychology (e.g., adjustment to chronic illnesses, surgery preparation and education, pain management, adjustment to long-term hospitalization) as well as clinical child psychology (e.g., Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, affective/anxiety disorders, behavioral/conduct problems, and parenting issues). Training is provided in the areas of interdisciplinary care, hospital consultation/liaison, inpatient treatment, brief outpatient treatment, crisis assessment/intervention, and limited psychological assessment and testing. Specific patient populations include but are not limited to, children with acute, procedural, and chronic pain, rare orthopedic conditions, sports-related injuries, neurological disorders, and rheumatological disorders. Although Scottish Rite for Children has a niche focus on orthopedic conditions and sports medicine, the skills acquired in pediatric psychology during this fellowship will generalize to working with other medically complicated youth. Similarly, prior experience treating patients with orthopedic impairments is not a prerequisite to apply to this fellowship.

The Pediatric Psychology Postdoctoral Training Program is offered through the Psychology Department of Scottish Rite for Children at both our Dallas and Frisco Campuses. The Psychology Department is committed to quality clinical care and healthy child development despite the stress and demands associated with the child’s health-related condition. Licensed psychologists and affiliated staff with expertise in pediatric psychology and behavioral health coordinate and participate in interdisciplinary health care, related teams, hospital committees, and research. Direct clinical inpatient and brief outpatient services are provided to SRC patients and their families and caregivers.

The Psychology Department at Scottish Rite for Children is committed to evidence-based practices and the scientist-practitioner model. As such, the fellow will be offered opportunities to engage in collaborative research with fellowship supervisors and other staff. The Fellow’s daily schedule varies depending on consults received in the Psychology Department and his/her current rotation. It will likely include attending clinics, seeing patients in the clinic setting in collaboration with other medical providers, presurgical assessment and preparation, brief outpatient therapy as indicated by the medical plan of care, rounding on inpatients, crisis assessment and intervention, participating in educational activities, and participating in research. The fellow also attends training sessions (didactics, rounds), participates in at least two hours of supervision per week, and on-call coverage as assigned.
