Valderrama Psychological, the private practice of Dr. Josie Valderrama, is recruiting for 2 part-time post-doctoral clinical fellowships on a rolling basis. Dr. Valderrama’s practice is located in San Francisco, California. The post-doctoral fellowship entails a flexible, integrative orientation built on a foundation of mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapies (ACT, DBT) as well as experiential modalities including Ericksonian depth work, Somatic Experiencing, parts work, attachment and the transpersonal. The focus is on working individually with adults, particularly those at the intersection of BIPOC and gender, sexual, relational diversity (GSRD).
Description: The private practice of Dr. Josie Valderrama (she/they) provides psychological services to adult individuals using integrative, evidence-based practice focusing on a variety of areas (e.g., Anxiety and Mood Disorders, High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and adjustment disorder), typically at the sub-acute level. While diagnosis and case conceptualization are vital components, the practice encompasses not only pathology but also life enhancement processes, especially around creativity, achievement and self-compassion. Dr. Valderrama’s main category of diagnostic focus is treating anxiety disorders using evidence-based treatment including mindfulness-based CBT (acceptance, values exploration, overcoming overly dichotomous thinking), exposure and visualization. Relational considerations are taken into account such as transference-countertransference, the therapeutic alliance as a relationship model, and collaborating with clients regarding the therapeutic framework.
Dr. Valderrama is a founding member of Bay Area Open Minds, a 200+ strong network of therapists affirming GSRD; author of 2 ACT books; subject matter expert on the CPLEE; originator of the Problematic Smartphone Use Scale, and APA published. California License No. PSY27913.
Fellows can gain the following experiences:
Experience with integrative evidence based practice: The fellow will receive training in contextualizing and integratively applying evidence based treatment including ACT, CBT and DBT skills.
Individual treatment experience: Treatment is conceptualized from a multiculturally-informed and decolonized biopsychosocial perspective. Considerations can include levels of physical activity, social isolation, sleep and eating habits, behavioral patterns—within the context of identity, socioeconomic status and other factors.
Multidisciplinary collaboration: The practice coordinates with a variety of professionals including psychiatrists and other medical providers as well as mental health clinicians to coordinate care regarding psychotropic medication, entheogenic treatments and couples/family therapy.
Diversity Specialization: The practice specializes in working with adult populations within the intersection of BIPOC and GSRD including LGBTQ+ individuals. This is an in-demand focus which requires cultural sensitivity and supervised experience to gain competency and expertise.
Private Practice: Fellows have the opportunity to directly experience working within the milieu of an urban private practice. Both telehealth and in-person treatment, with the possibility of utilizing the practice office for some client sessions. Fellows are W2 part-time employees who receive commission-based salary that is an agreed upon split of their client fees.
