The main objective of the fellowship is to provide the opportunity to develop competency in the professional practice of neuropsychology, with specific emphasis placed on clinical problems in a medical center setting. Since the setting for this fellowship is in the Rehabilitation Medicine Department, emphasis is on work with individuals with a range of neurological, physical, emotional, and behavioral disabilities. Our training program is structured to be consistent with the Houston Conference Guidelines and the drafted Minnesota Conference Guidelines for specialty training in Clinical Neuropsychology.
Fellows may select to work exclusively with adults or pediatrics for the duration of their training. Fellows working with adults may select two years of outpatient training or one year of inpatient and one year of outpatient work. Common presenting problems in our adult patients include stroke, dementia, TBI, and epilepsy. Pediatric fellows work predominantly in outpatient clinics, with some consultation on our pediatric critical care unit. Our pediatric training emphasizes working with medically complex patients (e.g., endocrine disorders, oncology, epilepsy) rather than neurodevelopmental conditions. Requests for lifespan training will be considered, but only offered to applicants who demonstrate the requisite clinical and administrative capacity.
The majority of a fellow's time is dedicated to clinical work (~70%) with the remaining portion comprising supervision, didactics, research, and administrative duties. Participation in clinical research is required, although this will account for only about 5-10% of a fellow's time. Opportunities for supervision of externs and interns are available and may be formally built into a fellow's schedule.

Over the course of their 2 years of training, fellows are required to present at least 2 articles for journal club, lead 2 case presentations, and participate in 2 mock fact-findings that mimic the format of the fact-finding examination required for ABPP certification in clinical neuropsychology. Fellows are also required to take the EPPP and pursue licensure in New York State upon completion of the first year of training.
