Elements of quality clinically focused postdoctoral training

The CWC training program adheres to the American Psychological Association’s profession-wide competency of individual and cultural diversity along with the mental health code of ethics and state laws and rules. We believe that this training is vital to all parts of counselor development and competence and thus, is incorporated into all areas of supervision, training seminars, evaluations, and professional activities.The training program is also committed to cultivating an atmosphere that is conducive to learning by providing clinical postdoc fellows with an appropriate blend of support and challenge. Postdoctoral fellows are treated as early career professionals and as such, are given a great deal of autonomy and responsibility. Simultaneously, postdoctoral fellows will receive the professional support necessary to allow for their continued professional development.

Postdoctoral fellows will be expected to fulfill the multiple roles of a university counseling center clinician, which include counseling services (individual, couples, and/or group counseling), assessment, crisis intervention, referral, consultation, outreach, supervision of student trainees, participation in staff meetings and training seminars, and timely completion of necessary administrative functions. Postdoctoral fellows will receive a minimum of 1 hour of face-to-face individual and 1 hour of individual or group supervision weekly and be provided with various professional development opportunities.

The purpose of the group counseling specialty is to introduce a culturally mindful and trauma-informed approach for understanding group counseling work. Training will focus on developing competencies to support clients in a variety of general and specific concerns within the group counseling modality. Post-doctoral fellows will be introduced to a variety of group counseling models and intervention styles and provided with mentorship to develop their own group leadership style. Training activities may include both group counseling process observation and facilitation, outreach related to the promotion of group counseling services, and, if commensurate with the fellow's goals, shadowing the Assistant Director of Group Counseling and the Group Counseling Coordinator.
