The primary care clinics are family practice clinics, general internal medicine clinics, or a combination of the two. Primary care psychologists (and those in training) are viewed as valuable team members and are consulted for a variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety, acute stress disorder, smoking cessation, weight loss, and treatment adherence for chronic diseases such as COPD, Heart Failure, and Diabetes. Fellows will provide targeted, evidence-based care through warm hand offs and brief episodes of treatment. Fellows collaborate with attending physicians, residents, psychiatrists, advanced practitioners, medical case managers, nursing staff, and medical pharmacists routinely to deliver comprehensive, quality care to patients. Attendance at team huddles, provider meetings, and Medical Home meetings add additional interdisciplinary, team-based care opportunities.
One of our fellowship positions is located in Danville, PA and is full-time PCBH. Our second PCBH fellowship position is located in Scranton PA area and is 40% PCBH and 60% PsychoOncology. Cancer Clinic rotation includes the following responsibilities: providing integrated behavioral health care to cancer patients and families as well as coordinating with medical providers; provide short-term outpatient psychotherapy, curbside consultations and possibly inpatient consultations; participate in disease-site specific tumor board meetings; opportunity to collaborate with bone marrow transplant team and complete pre-transplant evaluations.
In addition to clinical experience, the fellow will attend regular seminars with other Geisinger psychology fellows on professional topics (e.g., preparation for the EPPP, vita preparation, interviewing skills, salary negotiation) and specific health psychology topics (e.g., somatic disorders, functional neurologic symptoms, CBT for insomnia, LGBTQ and diversity training). The fellow will also participate in two hours of individual supervision each week and may have the opportunity to work with the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, train medical residents or students, and/or supervise PCBH interns.
