The fellowship program is designed to provide excellent clinical training in lifespan neuropsychology and in the evaluation of bilingual, bicultural, and diverse patients. Approximately 50% of our patients are Spanish speaking or bilingual. The postdoctoral fellow in this track will have the opportunity to conduct comprehensive evaluations of children and adults in Spanish with bilingual and monolingual Spanish speaking patients as well as with our multicultural English and other language speaking patients (Albanian, Bengali, Igbo, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Turkish and others).

Primary responsibilities will be to assess children and adults in  our general neuropsychology practices where we conduct comprehensive evaluations of individuals with epilepsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, dementia, movement disorders, and other neurological conditions. A major focus of the position is the ability to assess traditionally underserved populations within our catchment area.

Located in the Department of Neurology, the Division of Neuropsychology is composed of 5 (soon to be 6) faculty members, two clinical fellows, and three externs. Referrals come from within the department of neurology, as well as from neurosurgery, pediatrics, psychiatry, geriatrics, primary care, internal medicine, and the community. In addition to a robust neurodegenerative disorder service, we are actively involved with the world renowned epilepsy service (http://www.montefiore.org/neurology-comprehensive-epilepsy-center), the Multiple Sclerosis Center and the division of movement disorders at Montefiore. Fellows receive extensive clinical training in the evaluation of patients with a broad range of neurologic disorders including (but not limited to) epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, hydrocephalus, autism, developmental delays/learning disabilities and stroke. Fellows also participate in pre- and post-surgical evaluations for epilepsy and deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgeries. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to participate in pre-surgical Wada tests and intra-/extra-operative brain mappings. Trainees attend neuropsychology didactics, departmental grand rounds, and several recurring case conferences. Didactic presentations and supervision of practicum students is expected.

The fellow spends approximately 70% of their time performing outpatient clinical work (neuropsychological assessments). Inpatient assessments, consultations with other specialties/providers and the possibility for training in cognitive remediation will be included as available. Additionally, the fellow is expected to work on a research project which will result in a poster or a paper prior to the successful completion of their fellowship. Opportunities for independent research outside of this project will be available to the interested fellow but are not a component of the fellowship.

Fellows have weekly individual and group supervision with the fellowship director and receive case-specific supervision with the attending neuropsychologist supervising each case. Our training program follows the Houston Conference model for specialty training in clinical neuropsychology.

Candidates for this track are expected to be fluent in Spanish. Prior experience conducting neuropsychological evaluations in Spanish while a plus, is not a pre-requisite.
