Newberg, Oregon

The city of Newberg is located just outside of the Portland metro area.

Postdoctoral residents training at the Newberg location complete mental health diagnostic intake assessments, provide individual and group therapy, provide consultation to the multidisciplinary team (twice weekly multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and as needed consultation), and engage in risk assessment and crisis intervention. Feedback informed treatment is embedded into our programming, and more comprehensive psychological testing opportunities may be available but are typically limited as our patients are in early sobriety. Residents are provided 2+ hours of supervision weekly including 1 hour of individual and 1 hour of group supervision. They also receive 1 hour of didactic training monthly and 1 hour of group supervision focused on motivational interviewing. Further, there are opportunities to participate in other training including continuing education courses that are frequently offered, and there is support for EPPP study. Additional tasks include email, documentation, treatment planning, providing continuing care recommendations, and providing patient lectures. Opportunities for mentorship and co-facilitating group supervision with psychology practicum students and/or counseling interns may be available.

Residents treat adult patients in a residential inpatient and day treatment/partial hospitalization addiction treatment facility focusing on a wide range of mental health presentations co-occurring with substance use disorders. Our patients come from all around the country and are diverse in regard to age, disability, religion, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and gender. Most of our patients present with some degree of complex trauma / post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, grief, relational and/or other issues. Residents will become skilled at understanding, assessing, stabilizing and treating a vast array of complex issues. The mental health team strives to provide patient care and clinical consultation that is trauma informed and individualized to each patient.

Residents are trained to be ethical providers and to work with a multidisciplinary team approach including collaboration with addiction counselors, addiction techs, physicians, nurses, medical assistants, psychiatry, spiritual care providers, family counselors, and their mental health team in order to provide the best holistic patient care. Our organization also values the disease model of addiction and utilizes 12-step modalities. Our facility in Newberg and the mental health team values a culture of humility, authenticity, and compassionate trauma informed care.

Postdoctoral residents in Newberg typically start their year-long residency around August, and we can be flexible to work with you and your schedule. The workday is from 8-5 Monday-Friday during the first month while getting oriented, and then transitions to working 8-5 Tuesday-Saturday. Residents will also be available about 1 week per month for afterhours phone consultation to support staff when a patient is in crisis.

Resident supervision and support is shared between a team of full-time licensed psychologists on site (Dr. Bobby Trihub, Dr. Brandi Schmeling, and Dr. Jory Smith). Administrative oversight is provided by the mental health clinic manager, Dr. Eric Milne. See our profiles at: https://www.hazeldenbettyford.org/locations/newberg/team

Fringe Benefits
A postdoctoral resident is a 1-year full-time employee position at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, a nonprofit organization. The stipend for the residency year is $48,000. Residents also qualify for employee benefits, which include group medical, dental, group life, and disability insurance. Hazelden Betty Ford also offers a retirement plan, paid holidays, 4 weeks of personal time off, and other benefits. Postdoctoral residents may also take advantage of many opportunities provided by our Mental Health Centers. As part of Hazelden Betty Ford, there are several continuing education opportunities available throughout the year. Time devoted to conference workshops and licensure examination is also available. All supervision will be provided onsite.
Research opportunities
Although Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation does have a robust research department (The Butler Center for Research, as well as a separate publishing department), this residency training program is not directly involved in the research department. This is a clinical training position. Additional research opportunities or interests would be considered case by case.
Additional Comments
Because this site provides residential treatment and day treatment with housing on campus, this site has remained open for in-person services during the COVID-19 Pandemic. We have taken extra precautions with COVID testing of all new patients, screening measures with staff, expectation that patients and staff wear masks as guided by local mandates and site leadership, and some meetings have been moved to online virtual formats. We have had no concerns with continuing training, while continuing to provide our salary and benefits to our trainees.
Application Instructions
Applications are accepted throughout the year. The recommended deadline for applications is January 1. We expect to interview from mid-January through early-February, and to start making offers 2/13/2023. Residency start date in August 2023 is flexible. Application Materials: • Official graduate transcripts. • Three letters of recommendation from supervisors familiar with your clinical work and/or research. • Letter of interest indicating your postdoctoral residency and career goals. • A current curriculum vitae. • A copy of your doctoral degree (or verification of eligibility and readiness from your school's Director of Training confirming you are on track to complete your doctorate prior to the residency start date). • A copy of any relevant publications (recommended but not required). • Applicants are welcome to apply to more than one location through the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. If applying to more than one site, simply submit one application and indicate location preferences on the letter of interest. It is preferred for all application materials to be submitted at one time, but it is acceptable to send items separately as needed. The training team will not review your application until it is complete. Please send HBFF Newberg application materials by email or mail to: Dr. Eric Milne, Mental Health Manager 1901 Esther Street Newberg, OR 97132-9529 emilne@hazeldenbettyford.org (503)554-7907 Please feel free to reach out with application questions to Dr. Milne who will be coordinating applications. You can also reach out to the supervisory team, Dr. Trihub (btrihub@hazeldenbettyford.org), Dr. Schmeling (bschmeling@hazeldenbettyford.org), or Dr. Smith (jsmith@hazeldenbettyford.org) with other questions about the residency experience. Regarding interviews on site versus virtual, we typically encourage in-person interviews as we believe that meeting the team and viewing the facility allows you to get a sense of our wonderful environment and culture. We also recognize that not everyone is able to travel and can easily make accommodations for virtual interviews. Additionally, if the state of COVID-19 changes in our area, the training program will determine whether we will be able to provide the option of in-person interviews as we get closer to the date of offering interviews.
