Position Summary: Drs. Brown & Schwartz in Chicago, IL and San Francisco, CA are seeking applicants for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellowship positions. Postdoctoral fellows’ primary responsibilities will be: conducting intake assessments and providing individual, couple, and group psychotherapy as well as opportunities for psychological assessment and testing. Secondary responsibilities include: administrative tasks, networking with other clinicians, collaborating with practitioners across disciplines and professional development. Fellows will receive 2 hours of weekly supervision with a licensed clinical psychologist, participation in clinical consultation group, and funds towards professional development. The position aims to prepare the Postdoc to accrue the necessary clinical hours to sit for the EPPP and move toward licensure. We are seeking highly motivated, self-starters who emphasize psychodynamic and relational frameworks in their work and who have an interest in working in a group private practice long-term. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and high level of attention to detail are essential.
Practice Details: Dr. Brian Brown and Dr. Ben Schwartz have been colleagues and friends for several years. They share a group practice in The Monadnock Building in downtown Chicago and in San Francisco with 3 current Postdoctoral Fellows, 2 Master's Level interns, and 2 former postdocs that have stayed on as Staff Psychologists. In 2021, Brian relocated to San Francisco, CA where he is in full-time independent practice but remains Partner at Brown & Schwartz in this Digital Age, while also returning to Chicago for in-person connection with the whole team. Both Brian and Ben bring years of experience in university counseling, community mental health, and inpatient hospitals. Together, they have co-facilitated a weekly interpersonal process group and regularly consult with one another and with colleagues across the city. Brian and Ben together completed a 2-year certificate program in adult psychoanalytic psychotherapy at The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute and Brian is currently a Candidate in Psychoanalysis at Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC). They each have experience supervising postdoctoral fellows and advanced clinical psychology trainees and relish the opportunity to mentor the next generation of psychologists!
Brian received his master’s and doctorate from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He completed his APA-Accredited Internship at Stanford University and his Postdoctoral Fellowship at The University of Chicago. Brian worked in university counseling in New York City where he also started a part-time practice before relocating to Chicago where he opened a full-time practice. While trained as a generalist, Brian has a specialty working within the LGBTQ community and with emerging adults. He is passionate about his work in helping his patients find meaning in their relationships with themselves and those around them. Additionally, Brian has a zest for mentorship and supervision and looks forward to welcoming another postdoc into the practice.
Ben received his master’s and doctorate from The Illinois School of Professional Psychology. He completed his APA-Accredited Internship at University of California, Santa Barbara and his Postdoctoral Fellowship at The University of Illinois at Chicago, where he worked as a Staff Psychologist prior to entering private practice full-time. Areas of interest and specialization include working with men struggling with gender and sexuality, problematic relational patterns, and addressing ADHD across settings. In addition to providing psychotherapy, Ben conducts psychological testing for adults and children assessing for learning disabilities, ADHD, and emotional functioning.
Duties and Responsibilities: Serve a diverse range of clientele by providing individual, couples, and group therapy. Approximately 25-30 clinical hours per week expected. Must be willing to work some evening hours. Co-facilitate interpersonal process group. Conduct psychological assessment/testing batteries. Maintain up-to-date records for all clients. Network with other professionals in order to increase referral network and in the spirit of general professional development. Attend workshops or trainings in order to grow as a clinician and maintain best practices.
Minimum Qualifications: Hold a completed doctoral level degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-accredited program. A completed psychology internship is required (at the time of fellowship start date; which is flexible). Demonstrated experience and ability to work as part of a highly cohesive and collaborative group of colleagues. Interest in working in a group private-practice setting long term. Experiences and interests in psychoanalytic approaches to treatment; also interested in relational frameworks. Commitment to work within multicultural frameworks and a desire to work with highly diverse clientele (age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion, etc.). Basic knowledge of computer search engines, Microsoft Office, and attention to detail for electronic billing and note-taking.
