The Pediatric Psychology Fellowship at Akron Children's Hospital is a year-long training experience focused on assisting the fellow in defining and achieving their individual career goals while also ensuring development of competencies in pediatric psychology that are consistent with entry into independent practice by the end of the fellowship. The fellowship is housed within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Akron Children's Hospital in Akron, Ohio. Fellows spend time in both ambulatory and inpatient hospital settings during their training year. The fellowship is designed to support the achievement of fellow goals and objectives through a carefully designed combination of clinical experiences, weekly didactics, weekly supervision by licensed psychologists, teaching opportunities, and completion of a research project. For the 2024-25 training year, we are pleased to be able to offer an additional fellowship opportunity within our Eating Disorder Program.
Fellows spend approximately 60% of their time in direct patient care activities. For the Pediatric Psychology Fellows, a significant portion of their direct clinical care time is spent providing psychology coverage for the Inpatient Consultation/Liaison service for the medical floors of the hospital. This core rotation allows for sequential training in consultation/liaison skills, an essential skill for excellence in pediatric psychology. It is also an experience that provides training that is relevant to all fellowship objectives. The Eating Disorder Fellow will spend a significant portion of their direct clinical time providing outpatient and inpatient services within the Eating Disorder Program under the supervision of psychologists, Dr. Krista Caldwell and Dr. Kristen Kipperman.
The fellowship training year is broken into 2 six-month training periods. During each six-month training period, the pediatric psychology fellow has the option to choose up to 2 elective rotations to complement their year-long rotation on the Inpatient Consultation/Liaison service. The eating disorder fellow will have the option to choose one additional rotation each six-month period. After the first six months, fellows can remain in these rotations for a more intensive experience or switch to one or two new rotations. Fellows are assisted in developing a training plan within the first two weeks of their fellowship working with the director and other mentors to develop a plan that is most consistent with their personal training goals. Possible elective rotations include: Autism Diagnostic Clinic, Behavioral Sleep Medicine Clinic, Endocrinology/Diabetes, Epilepsy, Headache, Hematology/ Oncology, Palliative Care, Inpatient/Day Rehabilitation, Neuropsychology Assessment, Feeding Disorders, Healthy Active Living Clinic, Gastroenterology, Sports Medicine and Eating Disorders.

Our program has been steadfast in supporting the use of the Common Hold Date since it began. However, we have noticed that the adoption of this standard has not been uniform among other postdoctoral programs. We have even observed that applicants have felt pressure to make decisions on offers well prior to the Common Hold Date. As a result, our program has felt limited in trying to find the best fits for our fellowship positions. Therefore, we have decided that we will not be following the Common Hold Date during this recruitment cycle. We are committed to allowing candidates time to consider options and will work with each individual who receives an offer from us to establish mutually agreed upon timelines for holding/considering the offer.
