Fringe Benefits
Trainees are eligible to receive health insurance coverage equal to that of Federal Government employees. The Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) program offers a choice of plans and options. VA pays the larger percentage of the cost for the insurance and Fellows pay a percentage of the cost for their choice of individual or family coverage. Fellows accrue annual (vacation) and sick leave at a rate of 4 hours of each per pay period (every two weeks). In addition, Fellows receive the Federal holidays. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) does not provide malpractice insurance for its employees, including trainees and psychologists. However, the Federal Torts Claim Act indicates that the Attorney General will defend a person who is sued for malpractice or negligence if he or she was acting within the scope of his or her employment in or for the VHA. The Federal Tort Claim Act extends to trainees. Other benefits include up to 40 hours of professional leave may be granted for conference attendance, VA job interviews, and licensure exam day, free parking or available public transit subsidy, library facilities & online journal access.
