The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center is the main facility for the VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System. Psychology Service sponsors four APA Accredited Postdoctoral Residency programs with a total of up to 13 resident positions. All four programs were reaccredited for 10 years in 2019. The Clinical Psychology Residency accepts residents who focus on SMI, Addictions, or Trauma Psychology. Clinical Health Psychology offers residencies with a focus in Primary Care, Specialty Medicine, Headaches/TBI, or Geropsychology. Rehabilitation Psychology and Clinical Neuropsychology each have one resident for two-year residencies. The CP, CHP, and RP residencies follow a practitioner-scholar model, providing training for advanced competence in these areas. The Clinical Neuropsychology residency follows a scientist-practitioner training model. All residencies require completion of a scholarly project; please see our brochure for further details. Services are provided in-person, via video session, or by telephone. Applicants to all residencies must have graduated from an APA Accredited program in clinical or counseling psychology and have successfully completed an APA Accredited internship. Candidates must pass a physical exam, background security check, and possible random drug screen (all routine) prior to final appointment. An oath of office is required.

- Application Instructions
- Training staff rate application materials on standard criteria and conduct a performance-based interview (PBI). The PBI consists of a standard set of questions for each residency program, with some focus area including additional questions. Typically, we do an open house with information about our site and programs, and time to ask questions of current residents. We then break off into groups by residency program (Clinical, Clinical Health, Rehabilitation, and Neuropsychology) for information specific to that program and a chance to meet several supervisors from that program. Applicants can be put in contact with specific staff on request. Applicants are scheduled for an individual interview with 2-3 supervisors from the program and focus areas to which they have applied. Virtual interviews are our standard and preferred option, with some potential in-person options upon request. Applicants' ratings are not impacted by format of interview. Applicants are then ranked and the top applicant is offered the residency when all interviews for the position have been completed. We use the APPA-CAS application system and follow all APPIC guidelines for application including honoring the Common Hold Date guidelines. An applicant has the best chance of matching with us by having a well-rounded background pertinent to working at the VA, strong justification or experience for the specialty and focus area, attention to diversity issues, and professional presentation of themselves.
