The Hines VA Medical Center is proud to offer a Fellowship specializing in General Mental Health and Special Populations. This fellowship provides an outstanding opportunity for advanced training in mental health care, with a dual focus on general mental health services and the needs of Veteran populations from special backgrounds or possessing marginalized identities. Fellows will primarily engage in the provision of care in clinical settings while also participating in professional development activities, and various projects with a focus on unique populations of Veterans. The fellowship offers considerable flexibility, allowing trainees to tailor their experience to align with their individual objectives, training needs, and career goals.

During this fellowship, each fellow will undertake a major rotation in the Mental Health Clinic, dedicating approximately 2.5 to 3 days per week to serving a diverse array of Veterans. This rotation enables fellows to curate a patient caseload that aligns with their unique interests. Additionally, fellows will choose two six-month minor rotations focused on special populations, which are designed to complement their primary training goals and address any gaps in specialized care for Veterans with unique needs. Depending on their interests and career aspirations, fellows have the opportunity to gain advanced training in areas such as working with women Veterans, providing care in integrated settings, supporting lower SES individuals recovering from addiction, and serving LGBQ+ populations.

The fellowship program also includes a range of diversity-focused didactics, as well as opportunities to participate in national trainings on women's mental health, should that be an area of interest. Fellows will receive training in clinical supervision and teaching, preparing them for independent practice in the field of professional psychology. The program addresses a wide array of professional competencies, including assessment, psychotherapy and intervention, consultation, program development and evaluation, supervision, teaching, scholarly inquiry and clinical problem-solving, organization and management, professional, ethical, and legal conduct, and cultural and individual differences. Through these comprehensive rotational opportunities, fellows will develop advanced competencies in health service psychology, making them highly competitive for various professional roles in both traditional mental health and integrated care settings. The fellow will also gain competence in provision of supervision to Psychology interns and/or externs during this fellowship. The level of supervisory responsibility will be dependent on the skill set of the incoming Fellow and will likely evolve through the training year.

The long-term objectives of the General Mental Health and Special Populations Fellowship are to prepare fellows for careers that blend research and clinical practice, with a particular commitment to serving individuals with diverse identities and their families. To achieve these objectives, fellows will receive targeted supervision and didactic training centered on special populations of interest. In addition to clinical duties, fellows will be expected to present on relevant topics at the Internship Seminar Series and other forums throughout the year depending on the Fellow’s interests and scheduling (e.g., Integrated Care Grand Rounds, Loyola University Psychology journal club, Psychiatry Resident didactic series, Social Work CE series).

We invite interested applicants to review our website for more information on the fellowship and how to apply.
