2018 APPIC Match - Phase I
Statistics for Applicants from Canadian Schools and Programs in Canada

February 23, 2018

This year, the imbalance between applicants from Canadian schools and internship positions in Canada was much improved. Compared to the 2017 APPIC Match, the number of registered applicants from Canadian schools decreased by 24 (12%) to 169 applicants, while the number of internship positions in Canada increased by 1 (1%) to 162 positions. It should be noted that the decrease in applicants was likely related to the stricter Match eligibility requirements that were implemented this year, as six Canadian doctoral programs that participated in the 2017 Match (with a total of 18 registered applicants) were not eligible to participate in the 2018 Match.

A total of 133 applicants from Canadian schools were matched to an internship position in Phase I, while 23 applicants were not matched and another 13 withdrew or did not submit a Rank Order List. A total of 28 positions in Canada remained unfilled from Phase I, twice the number as compared to last year.

This year, the number of registered applicants from Canadian schools exceeded the number of internship positions in Canada by 7 (169 vs. 162), as compared to a difference of 32 last year.
