Question 2. May internship sites require that internship applicants
supply a photo along with an application?
Although it is not illegal for an internship or postdoctoral
site to require a photo, we caution against sites requiring a
photo. The rationale for that is that requiring a photo accompany
an application for an internship or postdoctoral position probably
could be deemed a discriminatory practice under a number of federal
or state statutes. These include Title VII of the Civil Rights
Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967,
the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Title IX of the Education
Amendments of 1972, and various state statutes of a similar nature.
Thus, while there is no APPIC policy prohibiting a site from requiring
that a photo accompany an application, APPIC discourages this
practice. It could raise the specter of discrimination.
