FAQ for Internship Applicants Back
to FAQ
Question 13. I understand that internship sites are not required
to notify applicants who receive an interview but are later eliminated from consideration. How
will this affect my rankings?
It is true that programs are not required to notify applicants
who are eliminated from consideration after completion of the interview, although some may choose
to do so as a courtesy to applicants.
When constructing your Rank Order List, you should rank all programs
to which you would like to be matched and which are considering
ranking you, in the order in which you would prefer them. If you
are unsure as to whether you are still being considered by a program,
you may still choose to rank that program, and doing so will not
hurt your chances at any of the other programs that you have ranked.
If you submit your Rank Order List to NMS, and subsequently receive
notification from one of your ranked programs that they are no
longer considering you, you do not need to make any changes to
your list. If you have ranked a program that doesn't rank you,
the computer will simply skip that program on your List and move
to the next-ranked program, without penalizing you or reducing
your chances of being matched to any other program on your List.
To summarize, there is no "risk" or "penalty" to ranking a program, even if that program ultimately does not rank you. So, unless you've been informed by a program that you are no longer under consideration, it's probably best to go ahead and rank that program if you consider it to be an acceptable option for you.
