| Program Description |
Program Description:
Washburn Center for Children provides diverse and comprehensive training opportunities to predoctoral psychology interns. Training focuses on assessment and intervention of children, adolescents, and families from a diverse urban and suburban population. Interns also have the opportunity to provide therapy to some adult clients (who are internally referred, typically a parent of a Washburn client).
The Predoctoral Psychology Internship at Washburn Center for Children provides broad-based clinical training, with the opportunity to explore in more depth, if desired, areas of specialization such as multicultural treatment or treatment of clients who have experienced trauma. Training seminars provide interns with a general background in many areas such as development, specific interventions (e.g., play therapy, TF-CBT, DBT, EMDR), varied clinical topics, multicultural issues, and family dynamics/therapy. Supervision is provided by the Director of Training and one other staff psychologist, and collaboration with other professionals at the agency is strongly encouraged, based on the wealth of knowledge and expertise among professionals working within the many programs at Washburn.
Interns will spend the majority of their time working within the Outpatient Department, seeing clients primarily within the clinic setting. Interns spend approximately 50% of their time in direct clinical service (therapy and psychological assessment) and the reminder of their time is spent in training seminars, team case consultations, and individual/group supervision. As part of their orientation, interns outline with the Director of Training their interests, goals, and skills. In this way, the Director of Training can, as much as possible, refer therapy and assessment cases to interns that are commensurate with their skills and clinical interests. Interns also have the opportunity to develop supervisory skills through providing weekly supervision to a predoctoral practicum student.
