Program Description
Program Description:
The internship program prepares interns as strong generalists for doctoral level positions in the practice of psychology. The basis of the training program is a developmental apprenticeship model that has as its overarching goal the professional growth of the psychology intern. As we apply this model, interns are provided with the necessary training, teaching, supervising, modeling and mentoring to meet their professional and personal goals.

Interns gain experience in individual, couples and group counseling/psychotherapy; crisis intervention; assessment; teaching, supervision and training; and outreach and consultation. Training includes a weekly case conference, a weekly seminar with the university psychiatrist and/or psychiatric clinical nurse specialist, and up to two additional hours per week of didactic seminars. Interns are encouraged to take an active role in designing their training to include their professional interests and needs. Our Emphasis Agreement is designed to assist interns who choose to have a more specialized focus on areas such as provision of supervision, couples therapy, diversity, working with student athletes; career counseling or other areas of their interest. Some Emphasis Agreements may include experiences at sites external to the Counseling Center on the UT campus, such as the Black Cultural Center, the International House and Career Services.

The internship program is highly valued by Counseling Center staff members and every effort is made to provide a warm and supportive environment that models and attends to professional and personal growth.
