Program Description
Program Description:
CSI provides high quality services to ethnically diverse and economically disadvantaged children, adolescents, and families. Most CSI clients have experienced psychological trauma related to child maltreatment, domestic violence, or exposure to community violence.

Interns provide clinic, school and in-home outpatient psychotherapy services. CSI's philosophy embraces the local clinical scholar-practitioner model of training, aiming to integrate current research and best-practices with community-targeted clinical services. CSI emphasizes understanding the eco-psychological context that impacts families, including prejudice and oppression. Interns are engaged in the integration of care through interdisciplinary collaboration & consultation-both inside and outside our agency-with psychiatrists, pediatricians, social workers, mentors and school personnel.

Our agency emphasizes psychodynamic thinking but faculty is intentionally eclectic in theoretical orientation, creating a stimulating learning environment. Trainers are supportive and emotionally available, modeling honesty and directness. CSI wants Interns to grow as people, and to tolerate the ambivalence generated by working with this multi-challenged population. We expect interns to advocate not only for their clients, but also for themselves, in an effort to meet their learning needs. Our goal is to graduate client-oriented, self-reflective, emotionally intelligent and humble psychologists who are competent and sensitive to ethno-cultural countertransference.

CSI offers a unique opportunity to learn to be a neurofeedback practitioner. We provide all training and mentoring for interns to obtain board certification from the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance.

Spanish-language fluency and interest and/or practicum experience w/children and families is desirable.

Additional information about training opportunities:
Treating families with complex problems is neither short-term nor solely problem-focused. It is long-term, and relationship based, with incremental changes occurring over time. Our clients have trauma-induced disorders (i.e. complex traumatic stress disorder), not chronic mental illness.
