The 2009 APPIC Clearinghouse

Since 1976, APPIC has offered a professional psychology internship placement "clearinghouse" that provides information about internship positions that are available after APPIC Match Day.

This page provides a general overview of the APPIC Clearinghouse. Participants should first read the information below, followed by a careful review of the detailed "Instructions for Applicants" or "Instructions for Programs" pages, as applicable.

The 2009 APPIC Clearinghouse will open at 11:00 am EST on Monday, February 23, 2009. Unmatched applicants who are searching for unfilled internship positions will have two sources of information: (1) a listing of unfilled positions from the Match, and (2) a Clearinghouse e-mail list that Training Directors will use to post information about available positions. An overview of each of these services is provided below.

ELIGIBILITY AND FEES

Applicants: There is no fee for applicants to use the Clearinghouse. Furthermore, applicants do not register to use the Clearinghouse.

An applicant is eligible to use the APPIC Clearinghouse if he/she: (a) meets APPIC's "Intern Applicant Policy," (b) has not been placed by the APPIC Match, and (c) has not accepted or committed to any other internship positions. Applicants who meet these three criteria are eligible even if they did not register for the Match, registered but withdrew from the Match, or registered but did not submit a Rank Order List to the Match.

Applicants who have been matched by the APPIC Match, or who have already accepted a position through the APPIC Clearinghouse, are contractually bound to attend the internship program to which they have been matched and may not seek other internship positions.

Programs: Internship programs (both APPIC members and non-members) that participated in the 2009 APPIC Match are eligible to use the Clearinghouse at no additional charge. For these programs, eligibility is automatic and no registration is required.

Non-member programs that did not participate in the Match may use the APPIC Clearinghouse e-mail list if they meet the criteria described in APPIC's policies regarding Match and Clearinghouse participation by non-members. Eligible non-member programs must register in advance by submitting a completed "Clearinghouse Agreement" along with the appropriate fee to APPIC. Please contact the APPIC Central Office in order to initiate the registration process.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PROGRAMS: If an intern withdraws or is terminated from a position at your site for any reason, either during the internship year or prior to the start of the year, you must consult with APPIC before announcing or filling this vacancy. Please contact Dr. Steve McCutcheon, Chair, APPIC Board of Directors, at (206) 764-2895 or Stephen.McCutcheon@va.gov .

LISTING OF UNFILLED POSITIONS

A listing of internship programs with positions available after the Match will be posted on the National Matching Services web site beginning at 11:00 am EST on Monday, February 23, 2009.

This list will include those internship sites with one or more positions that remain unfilled in the Match and that elect to publicize such vacancies in this manner. This list will not be updated after the initial release of the Match results, and will be removed from the NMS web site after ten days (11:00 am EST on Thursday, March 5, 2009). After March 5, 2009, the Clearinghouse e-mail list (described below) becomes the only source of information from APPIC about unfilled positions.

CLEARINGHOUSE E-MAIL LIST

In addition to the listing of unfilled positions described above, APPIC operates a free e-mail list service that allows internship programs to distribute information about available positions. Programs may use this "Clearinghouse" e-mail list to provide additional information about a vacancy that is shown in the "Listing of Unfilled Positions," to announce a new position that has become available, or to inform applicants that a previously-vacant position has been filled.

Applicants (or other interested individuals) may subscribe to the Clearinghouse e-mail list to receive notification of these available positions via e-mail. The Clearinghouse e-mail list will begin distributing messages at 11:00 am EST on Monday, February 23, 2009 and remain open through October 31, 2009 (participants may subscribe to the list at any time, but will not begin receiving vacancy postings until 11:00 am EST on February 23).
