2006 APPIC Members & Subscribers Survey
August 22, 2006
APPIC 2006 Surveys of Members and Subscribers - Summary and Highlights
Internship Member Survey (n= 385; 62% response rate)
2. 90% of respondents would support the development of a new APA Division on education and training (n= 339)
a. Many comments about the need for a forum and organized response regarding common concerns. Training deserves a strong focus by APA.
b. Want more of a voice for internship and postdoc training within APA, especially in the E&T and CoR.
c. Would support the idea but not sure it is necessary "APPIC meets my needs." Also, training should be integral to all divisions not a separate one.
d. Some comments about too many meetings and organizations already, and concerns about APA politics and expense.
e. Don't want APPIC to become more like APA.
f. Good idea even though I may not join.
g. Create a section on Professional Training within the Teaching of Psychology Division.
h. Would like more contact with other Training Directors and educators.
i. Would like to see more research on enhancing curriculum, training, supervision. New division could provide a "home" for this.
5. New scheduling software - 56% do not see any need for this.
11. Comments on the "Supply and Demand" issue
a. Supply and demand should be addressed systematically, with fewer graduate students and programs, more training grants for internships, more support for non-academic/government/medical school internships, continue to permit no-stipend internships.
b. Be more like AMA or ADA (dental assoc) in admitting numbers of students based on number of available residency slots, or like engineering which limits admissions of students based on future employment demand.
c. Identification of supply problem from large professional schools with profit motive to increase numbers of students. These schools should develop more internships.
d. APA should be more restrictive and selective about the type and quality of programs they accredit. Restrict programs with large numbers of students, high student debt, and low placement rates.
e. This may not be a problem if it "weeds" out less qualified students.
f. This is mostly an APA problem, not an APPIC one. Not within APPIC's power to solve.
g. Educate students at the undergrad level about this problem and future hurdle. More information about graduate school placement rates.
h. Intern work needs to be reimbursable which will provide more funding for internship programs.
12. Internship-graduate program communication
a. Most internship programs communicate with graduate programs only at mid- and end-year evaluation points, and when significant problems occur.
b. 63% of TDs would like Discussion of training goals and a plan prior to the start of the internship year
c. 33% of TDs feel "neutral" regarding satisfaction with communication; 45% are somewhat or very satisfied.
19. 53% of TDs think APPIC should stop printing the Directory. Some TDs just like the book, think it's easier to access and helpful, and think information should still be accessible when not online. Some would like to not "waste a tree" and save money.
23. Needs assessment - highest ranked interests are supervision, competencies, problem interns, ethical issues in training, and multicultural issues in training. New ideas are advocacy, psychopharmacology, and evidence-based practice.
24. APPIC conference - 26% plan to attend (n= 101), with 27% undecided.
30. 40% of respondents have been Training Directors at their site for 3 years or less.

Subscriber Survey (n= 155; 46% response rate)
3. 71% of respondents would support the development of a new APA Division on education and training (n= 105)
a. APA is too "bloated" already and respondents don't agree with its goals, also APA too expensive
b. Other organizations (e.g., training councils) and divisions already serve this purpose
c. APPIC should remain independent from APA
d. Would not want new division to set policy or represent one orientation or training model
e. Would like a forum to for DCTs to share ideas, opportunity for collaboration
f. Division 2 (teaching) could perform similar function, or perhaps the Education Directorate
g. Training issues have been neglected by other divisions
h. Already member of too many organizations
4. Comments on "Supply and Demand" issue
a. Reduce or cap the number of students graduate programs can accept
b. Proliferation of Psy.D. and/or "freestanding" professional schools ("stop the professional schools from turning out phds like rabbits.")
c. Increase number of affiliated internships
d. Lobby APA to be more circumspect about accrediting professional schools, especially if their ability to place students in internships fall below a certain percentage, or have high faculty:student rations
e. Remove internship as a requirement for doctoral degree, making internship postdoctoral
f. APPIC's role is to maintain high standards; graduate programs have responsibility for the higher number of students (supply side)
g. Increase number of internship sites by 1) increasing federal funding, 2) lobbying for second-payer/insurance reimbursement, 3) streamlining and reducing cost of accreditation process for internships, 4) increasing the number of half-time and consortium internships, 5) moving funds from postdoc fellowships to create more internship slots
h. Link numbers of students accepted to employment prospects for psychologists
5-10. Communication between graduate programs and internship TDs - the majority reported communication primarily at mid-year, end-year, and with problems. DCTs mostly commented that they did not think more communication was needed and think internship is fine to be independent of the graduate program
6. 69% (n= 108) were "somewhat" to "very satisfied" with communication with TDs
8-9. Repeated concern by DCTs was the lack or lateness of mid- and end-year evaluations from internship programs, but most graduate programs would not like to see more required contracts, forms, or evaluations
11. APPIC Directory - 51% favor keeping the printed directory, 49% favor online version only
