2005 APPIC Member Survey: APPIC Postdoctoral Members

July 24, 2005

This survey of APPIC Postdoctoral Members was conducted via the Internet between May 31 and June 1, 2005. All members who have an email on file with APPIC Central Office were invited to participated.

Results of the survey are presented below. A total of 88 APPIC Postdoc Member sites were invited; 51 (58%) opened the survey; 46 (52%) completed the survey.

Some of the more interesting findings from this survey include:

  1. Sixty-four percent of postdoc members surveyed supported APPIC sponsoring an event at APA for training directors and applicants to meet each other.
  2. Forty-nine percent of postdoctoral members reported less than 11% of the postdoctoral time was dedicated to research.

  3. Ninety-six percent of postdoctoral APPIC members used the APPIC Directory to advertise for their positions.

  4. Fifty-six percent of APPIC postdoc member sites agreed that APPIC should continue to allow NON-members to advertise for postdocs on the APPIC postdoc listserve.

  5. Forty-two percent of the programs stated that APPIC should NOT provide any coordination of offers or acceptances.

  6. Ninety percent of postdoc members required their postdocs to attend a weekly training seminar; seventy-nine percent encouraged their postdocs to complete the EPPP.

  7. The highest percentage of funding comes from the parent institution for funding the postdoc trainee.

  8. Seventy percent of APPIC postdoc members OPPOSED the elimination of the postdoctoral year of training as a requirment for licensure.

  9. Eighty-seven percent of postdoc member sites stated that 91-100% of their postdocs were ready for independent practice by the end of the postdoctoral training year.
  10. The majority of respondents felt the elimination of the postdoctoral year prior to licensure was a bad idea.
